Understanding Emotional Freedom Technique (aka EFT "tapping")

What exactly is “EFT”?

When I first personally encountered EFT, I thought it was weird and strange.  But I’m a researcher of all things physical, emotional, and spiritual healing and this kept coming up over and over again. I read over 20+ books on the matter, discussed with peers, talked with practitioners, received it myself, and really dug deep in order to learn more. And in the process of getting certified in Clinical EFT, I saw how incredible our breakthroughs can be!

At its core, EFT is a powerful stress reduction technique.

As Dr. Mercola states: “EFT is therapy at the speed of light”.

The Emotional Freedom Techniques, or EFT, is a psychological acupressure technique that I now routinely use in my coaching practice and most highly recommend to optimize your emotional, mental, and physical health. Although it is still often overlooked, emotional health is absolutely essential to your physical health and healing — no matter how devoted you are to the proper diet and lifestyle, you will not achieve your body’s ideal healing and preventative powers if emotional barriers stand in your way.

It’s estimated that stress is a root cause of up to 90% of dis-ease, weight gain, and dis-orders. Tapping is proven to reduce stress, lower cortisol, improve sleep, reduce anxiety, relieve pain, increase productivity, and so much more!

What I’ve discovered is that our body loves healing! And this method is nothing short of amazing.

I’ve been doing inner healing, holistic health coaching, and mindset coaching for many years and adding “tapping” in has allowed me to help bring a powerful whole person approach to healing and breakthrough.

The breakthroughs I’ve both experienced personally and seen have been such a beautiful gift.

It also happens to be one of the top most effective, clinically studied techniques to help with stress, PTSD, trauma, and other stress-related health issues.

“Tapping is one of the most directed and powerful ways to peel away those layers of chronic stress”

How Does it Work?

In essence, what EFT is is the release of physical and emotional pain through acknowledging its presence while verbally stating that you unconditionally accept and love yourself even in the midst of this pain and pressure.

So the therapy is taking place in the presence of healing LOVE rather than destructive self-judgment.

As you repeat these statements, you are gently tapping on several acupuncture points around your head and chest, with the goal of interrupting the negatively programmed energy flow, thus dismantling the learned fight/flight emotional response, which in turn allows positive emotions to come forth.

We know that thoughts and feelings of worry, pain, anxiety, fear, shame, frustration, anger, envy, bad memories and stressful events are damaging to your mind, body and soul.

The good news is that you can quickly learn this technique to clear out the negative emotions and make room for positive, joy-filled living.

You will learn how to release addictive, compulsive and dysfunctional behaviors that hold you back from the authentic joy and peace that can be yours.

EFT empowers you to:

  • Release negative emotions and limiting beliefs
  • Reframe your self-image and restore your confidence
  • Release emotions that cause physical pain
  • Embrace your real identity and true potential
  • Overcome emotional eating and food cravings
  • Set realistic goals and achieve them quickly and easily
  • Improve personal and professional relationships
  • Live and work with less interpersonal conflict
  • End doubt, procrastination and self-sabotage
  • Enhance your communication skills and connections with others
  • Become a more effective friend, spouse and parent
  • Learn simple techniques to better retain what you read or study

You can do EFT on your own or with a trained coach.

The process is free, quick, easy, has no harmful side effects and can be done anywhere you can get 5 minutes of privacy, plus it requires no equipment.

This study shows the brain scans of individuals experiencing a severe anxiety disorder who did 12 tapping sessions. Amazing!

“There is nothing that has been as effective in reducing my physical pain and psycho-emotional discomfort and stress as Tapping.”

Science and Research Backed

The best way to learn this technique is to test your breathing capacity.

Our breath is often affected with stress, thoughts, physical health challenges.

Reduce Anxiety in Under 10 Minutes

Brain scans confirm 76% of patients treated with EFT experienced complete remission. This study included an inspection of brain changes after treatment for anxiety. It was the first EFT Tapping study to do so and used pre- and post-treatment functional brain imaging. See study here

Positively Influence Your DNA

In a pilot study on the physiological effect of EFT Tapping, the genetic expression changed in 72 genes implicated in overall health.Generally, immunity genes were up-regulated while inflammation genes were down-regulated.

This included genes associated with:

  • suppression of cancer tumors
  • protection against ultraviolet radiation
  • regulation of type 2 diabetes
  • insulin resistance
  • immunity from opportunistic infections
  • antiviral activity
  • synaptic connectivity between neurons
  • synthesis of red and white blood cells
  • enhancement of male fertility
  • building white matter in the brain
  • metabolic regulation
  • neural plasticity
  • reinforcement of cell membrane
  • And more
Human beings are most accurately regarded as persons, rather than mechanisms. A person is a single, integrated whole, alive and aware and capable of both influencing and being influenced by the world around them. Rather than being fixed, a person heals. Healing is an active process which requires that the body regulate and coordinate its functions. Being fixed, or, to use the preferred phrase in medicine, being cured, is a passive process requiring only that the sick individual submit to the ministrations of the proper expert.

Getting Started - Testing with Your Breathing

The best way to learn this technique is to test your breathing capacity.

Our breath is often affected with stress, thoughts, physical health challenges.

Instructions:

  1. START – by taking 3-4 deeper breaths. Tune in to your body when you do so. Notice any restrictions or feelings in your body.
  2. TEST – As you tune in to your body, I want you to feel about how much breath you can breathe in using a percentage: 0% means you’re not breathing at all and 100% means you can do a deep full breath with no restrictions at all. Write that percentage down.
  3. TAP – Walk through 1 very simple tapping round as explained in the video or in the handout below.
  4. CHECK-IN – Pause the tapping and take 3-4 deep breaths again and measure your percentage. Do you notice any shifts?
  5. TAP AGAIN – This time as you tap, try shifting your language just slightly to become a bit more specific: Is there anything physical, emotional, or mental that is coming up for you as you tap? Ask yourself as you tap
  6. NOTICE – Did an emotional thought or event arise as you were doing the exercise?

Put these issues on your list for a later tapping exercise either on your own or going deeper with your coach.
